Neuchâtel has no garbage pickup. Instead, the city is littered with converted shipping containers for recycling, and these bins for regular garbage. The aboveground bit you see is only the opening. The steel plate on which the opening sits is in fact the top of a 3-metre high box. These boxes are emptied by a big truck with a crane that lifts the boxes out of the sidewalk by grabbing onto those knobs on the top.
